Oh Noes! Some of my Garden/Landscape Plants are Toxic
Crap. I used to worry about my kids eating poisonous stuff, then it was an epileptic Boston Terrier with an affinity for every toxic plant in my garden; NOW I have to worry about the hens? Here’s some information-
Know Your Plants: Safe of Poisonous gives useful information on toxicity levels.
Hanbury House is a nice blog I discovered from Backyard Chickens. She has a good article on plants poisonous to hen, and an attitude I am going to adopt, rather than totally rip out my landscaping. The last time I had hens free ranging my backyard, I wasn’t even aware of all the poisonous stuff I had, and the girls NEVER touched any of it, or my garden.
Quality Chicken Food on the Cheap
A lot of us who raise our own food do so because we want control over quality. Here are a couple of ways to feed chickens on the cheap and still provide that quality! Raise your own bugs for a high protein addition to their diet. Personally, I am doing meal worms. Another way to boost quality is to get spent grains from your local brewery. Here are informational links on both ideas…
Great blog- The Walden Effect and article on raising meal worms
Backyard Chickens forum never disappoints for good information- heres a thread on mealworms
and another thread from Backyard Chicken forum on using spent grains
Homebrewtalk forum and a thread on what to do with spent grains…
